Shining Star Awardee 2024

Dr. MICHAEL McKIBBIN

Dr. Mike McKibbin dedicated nearly five decades to education as both a teacher and administrator. His passion for student success led him to volunteer more than 1,000 hours in his son’s Orangevale classroom, serve eight years on San Juan Unified’s Curriculum and Instruction Committee, and ultimately join the San Juan Unified School Board, where he served from 2014 until his retirement in 2023.

Earlier in his career, Dr. McKibbin played a key role at the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, helping to shape policies that placed over 60,000 new teachers in classrooms statewide during a critical period of class size reduction.

A lifelong learner, he holds a BA from Purdue, two Master’s degrees, and a doctorate in education from Columbia University. His global commitment to service began with the Peace Corps in India, where he taught villagers sustainable farming practices and launched a local feed mill and marketing cooperative.

Dr. McKibbin’s unwavering dedication to education and the San Juan community makes him a true Shining STAR.
